What is hardware and what do you need to know about it?

What does hardware mean?

The definition or translation for hardware is simple: the physical part of a computer system, that is, those visible components that you can touch. They allow software programs to be executed using various technical processes. Optical, acoustic or electrical signals are received and processed by the hardware, even stored and then used to play back information. 

The main components that make up the hardware

In a hardware store you will be able to find ready-made systems or you will be able to purchase various pieces of hardware with which to make your own configuration. Thus, hardware components are divided into four major categories, each with a very well-defined role. Here are the parts that together make a computer system work: 

  • The CPU, or central processing unit, is also called a microprocessor. It processes information at a speed of millions of operations every second. By mounting multiple processing cores, today's processors boast capacities between 1 and 4GHz; 
  • RAM or internal memory, used to store all the data necessary for the processor to function. They are taken from the hard disk and are only available if they are crossed by electric current. The speed of RAM memory is measured in GB. If you supplement the RAM memory, you will automatically increase the performance of the device. Basically, the computer will be able to manage more information in the same period; 
  • External memory, used to store information, even when you unplug the computer. Usually we talk about hard drives with impressive storage capacities, several terabytes for example. Lately we don't really rely on the classic hard drive anymore, but on SSD, that is, solid-state external memory. The speed of SSD is much higher. Of course, there is also the option of storage in Cloud, but only if you have internet access; 
  • Finally, we also discuss peripheral devices, i.e. a multitude of equipment mounted and connected to the computer motherboard via slots. They ensure the input of information and commands, their display to the user, but also the simultaneous input and output of data. 

 

Other components that a computer cannot function without are the motherboard, the main component that coordinates and communicates information to the other components of a computer, and the power supply. The size of the power supply will be different, depending on the overall energy consumption of the system, but also on how you will use the computer. For example, for graphic design or for running more complex applications, such as games, you will need quality components that will require a larger power supply. Of course, if you deal with 3D graphic renderings, you will also need a quality graphics processing unit.
