How do you make a backup? 

And we've come to the most important part: how exactly can you make a backup! First of all, you will need to take several aspects into account: 

 

What type of backup do you want? 

 

Although all backups serve the same purpose, they are not all the same. So, we will be dealing with: 

 

  • Full backup, the method by which you make a backup copy of absolutely all files in the company/organization. Usually, this method is used for the first backup copy;

 

  • Incremental backup, more precisely copying data when new files are generated or modified. Basically, the new information is added to the existing archive, the entire copying process is not resumed;

 

  • Differential backup, which copies all files generated after the full backup. It uses more resources, but you can recover your data faster in case of an emergency. 

 

Where do you store the data?

 

You need to think about what storage technology you will select. Local, on a server or in the cloud? Do you do it yourself or hire some specialists? Be careful, if you do a manual backup you will need to copy all the files, but also the databases to a secure environment. 

 

How often is it advisable to back up data?

 

There is no standard period according to which it is recommended to make a backup copy of important files, but you can set a deadline yourself, depending on each category of data. Therefore, we advise you to make a copy:

 

  • Daily, if we are talking about data that you cannot afford to lose, for example email files, customer management system, network settings or the telephone system;

 

  • Weekly, if we are talking about data that is important to your organization, but for which you would consume too many resources and time for a daily backup. Examples include general files, such as media files or data associated with websites. 

 

  • Every two weeks, for important data that changes periodically. For example, data related to company finances or payroll.
